BEST voted Entertainment Center App for Macs!
Plex is a media center that can catalog and play a wide range of audio, video, and photo formats. Designed with a ‘big screen’ interface, Plex can be likened to Apple’s Front Row application. You can even control it with Apple’s remote, as well as third-party remotes, such as Logitech’s Harmony series of smart remotes, or from a keyboard, using the arrow, return, and escape keys.
The big screen interface works well and has many more features than Front Row. Plex also has some of the best video codecs for high-definition video playback. I’ve used many different methods of playing video on my Mac – Apple’s QuickTime player, QuickTime with third-party plug-ins, and video players designed specifically for high-definition playback – but so far only Plex has been able to play 1080p video without hesitation or excessive loss of frames.
Plex supports a wide range of audio, video, and photo formats, allowing you to not only play CDs and DVDs, but also most of the common container formats, such as AVI, MPEG, WMV, MKV, MP4, MCA, and AAC. You can also use it to play many streaming sources, including Netflix and Apple’s movie trailers.
One drawback to Plex is its insistence on using a big screen interface, even if you’re using it locally on your Mac. This means you can’t use your mouse; only the keyboard and remote interfaces are available.
Plex is free, though it’s technically still considered a beta. The free version has a 6-month use limit, at which point you have to download a new version to continue to use it.
